Podcast Transcript:

Host: Hello and welcome to the All Seasons Weed and Feed podcast. Now, today we want to talk about some spring lawn care tips for you guys. So, it’s late April, and if you’ve stepped outside, you know that birds are singing, azaleas are in full bloom, but more importantly, your lawn is officially waking up right now.

The Golden Window

Host: So right now, we are in the “golden window” for lawn care. Soil temperatures are finally hitting that magic $65^{\circ}F$ mark , which means your grass is ready to eat. But unfortunately, that also means that so are the weeds. So, if you want a great summer lawn, the work starts now.

Feeding Your Lawn

Host: Your grass has been dormant all winter, and it’s hungry. So for the Alabama warm-season grasses—such as Bermuda, Zoysia, or St. Augustine—we’re entering the peak growth phase. So at All Seasons, we recommend a high-nitrogen fertilizer. It’s going to jumpstart that deep green color. And look for a blend, maybe, that has some added iron to give your lawn that “estate green” look without making the grass grow so fast. That way, you’re not stuck behind the lawn mower all weekend long.

The War on Weeds

Host: Now, let’s talk a little bit about weeds. If you missed your February pre-emergent application, don’t panic. But don’t wait any longer, either. Broadleaf weeds—you know, like dandelions, dollarweed, white clover—they’re starting to flower about now. So, a weed and feed application is perfect for that. Those granules will stick to the damp leaves and knock out the weeds, while the fertilizer sinks down into the ground and into the soil to strengthen your grass.

Mowing Tips

Host: So before you head out to mow, here’s a couple of tips that will help you get that nice, lush yard : Keep those lawn mower blades high this month. Taller grass helps shade the soil. It can help prevent new weeds from germinating and help your lawn maintain a lot of moisture because Alabama heat is going to start to climb.

Closing

Host: So don’t spend your weekend guessing at the big-box store.
