How to Get the Greenest Lawn on the Block This Spring

The birds are singing, the azaleas are blooming, and—if you haven’t noticed—your lawn is officially waking up. Late April is a “golden window” for lawn care. The soil temperatures have hit that magic 65°F mark, meaning your grass is ready to eat, and unfortunately, so are the weeds.

At All Seasons Weed and Feed, we know that a great summer lawn is built right now. Here is what your yard needs today to stay lush, green, and weed-free.

1. The "Wake-Up" Call: Nitrogen and Iron

Your grass has been dormant all winter, and it’s hungry. In late April, warm-season grasses (like Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine) are entering their peak growth phase.

  • The Program: We recommend a high-nitrogen fertilizer to jumpstart that deep green color.

  • Pro Tip: Look for a blend with added Iron. It provides that “estate-green” look without forcing excessive upward growth that keeps you behind the mower all weekend.

2. The War on Weeds: Post-Emergent Control

If you missed the pre-emergent window in February, don’t panic—but don’t wait. Right now, broadleaf weeds like Dandelions, Dollarweed, and White Clover are starting to flower.

  • The Strategy: A “Weed and Feed” application is perfect for this time of year. The granules stick to the damp leaves of active weeds to knock them out, while the fertilizer sinks into the soil to strengthen your grass.

  • Target Practice: If you see Nutsedge (the bright green, fast-growing “grass” that looks like a spike), regular weed killers won’t touch it. It requires a specific sedge-control treatment, which we can help identify!

3. Mow High for Health

It’s tempting to scalp the lawn early to “get it over with,” but cutting too short in the spring is a recipe for weeds.

  • The Rule: Keep your mower height a bit higher this month. Taller grass shades the soil, which prevents new weed seeds from germinating and helps the soil retain moisture as the Alabama heat starts to climb.
